Very popular among sailors, Tortola attracts people from all over the world as a spectacular sailing scene and experts praise it as one of the world's best. The harbor in Road Town acts as a bustling hub for ships. Some of the largest boat chartering companies in the British Virgin Islands operate on this island.
Many people choose Tortola as a starting destination because, other than its beauty and fair winds, this island lies in the midst of other islands and cays, all of them perfect for visiting on a sailing trip.
To the south, Norman Island, Peter Island, and Salt Island offer a variety of attractions including caves for snorkeling and great diving spots. Drop anchor and spend the day exploring the beautiful beaches. According to legend, the infamous pirate Blackbeard once sailed past these waters.
To the east lies Virgin Gorda, where grottos and rock formation decorate the shoreline, another great area for snorkeling, exploring, and quiet shopping. Sail north to visit Guana Island and west for Jost Van Dyke, an especially popular anchorage. The beach bars bustle with sailors and boaters from all over the world, who stop by just to have a drink. Mingle with other sailors and party the night away at the many bars that play live music. According to some, the famous drink, the Painkiller, was invented on Jost Van Dyke, a drink so strong it's purportedly lethal.
Though you may sail as far as your sailing contract allows, some places remain off-limits because of insurance and safety reasons. Many high reefs surround Anegada, which makes it almost impossible to navigate without running your boat aground. Another such place, Dead Man's Bay at Peter's Island contains sudden wind shifts and swells.
